Gotcha

Most recently, I have received a few comments that I think were spam. At the moment, anonymous comments are moderated, so I am thankful that you the reader did not have to spend/waste time sifting through garbage (Image by gueffel via Flickr).

Spam. The Poster. Issue 1.

To keep spam at bay, and possibly not moderating anonymous comments, I have added the CAPTCHA module for Drupal. So if you plan to post comments, there will be a little more work involved. Go thank the spammers.

  1. Download the module from the project website.
  2. Extract the files to <DRUPAL HOME>/sites/all/modules/.
  3. Login to the administration console for your Drupal installation.
  4. Activate the CAPTCHA module.
  5. Go to User management > CAPTCHA.
  6. Set the "Challenge type per form". I use the Image CAPTCHA for comments and contact pages. I personally find the user login CAPTCHA irritating, so I'll spare my users for now. But I will not hesitate to activate it if I detect brute-force attacks.
  7. Go to the "Image CAPTCHA" tab to customise your installation. Using a TrueType Font (.ttf) is highly recommended, and I found Open Font Library to be a great source of fonts that are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike Licence. Another similar resource is FontStruct, but the need to register to download put me off.
